Pre-Learning

This section shows how to build interest in the content, because learning depends on attention.

Start with an activity that reveals a performance gap.

Example:

Rationale:

Learning depends on attention. An opening activity that is relevant to the topic and also highlights a gap between current and desired performance can motivate learners.

Notes:

Frame gaps as normal so learners feel safe.

Help learners identify the benefits of each section.

Example:

Ask participants how the content in this section can improve their performance.

Rationale:

Adults are more likely to engage when benefits are clear, revisited throughout the learning, and identified by learners themselves.

Notes:

View this LinkedIn post for more ways to frame the “why.”

Write learning objectives with the words “will apply.”

Example:

Learners will apply keyboard shortcuts to copy and paste objects in PowerPoint.

Rationale:

“Will apply” signals that learners are expected to use the skill, which can increase commitment.
